How to Calculate Peak-to-Peak Voltage

Peak-to-peak voltage is the distance from the lowest negative amplitude, or trough, to the highest positive amplitude, or crest, of the AC voltage waveform. In other words, peak-to-peak voltage is equal to the full height of the waveform. Peak-to-peak voltage can be found using peak voltage or RMS voltage.

Peak Voltage to Peak-to-Peak Voltage Formula

If the peak voltage is known, then the peak-to-peak voltage can be found using this formula where VP is the peak voltage.

VP-P = VP × 2

Thus, peak-to-peak voltage is equal to peak voltage time two.

For example, let’s find peak-to-peak voltage using a peak voltage of 120 V.

VP-P = 120 V × 2
VP-P = 240 V

RMS Voltage to Peak-to-Peak Voltage Formula

Using RMS voltage, the peak voltage can be found using this formula where VRMS is RMS voltage.

VP-P = 2 × √2 × VRMS

So, peak-to-peak voltage is equal to two times the square root of two times RMS voltage.

For example, let’s find the peak-to-peak voltage using 75 V RMS voltage.

VP-P = 2 × √2 × 75 V
VP-P = 212.13 V
